On a guiet winter morning in New York State, there is a terrible accident.Thirteen-year-old Grace and her horse Pilgrim are both very badly hurt. Pilgrim is in great pain, but Grace's mother Annie, refuses to kill him. She believes that Grace cannot get better without him.
Annie finds Tom Booker, a"horse whisperer", in Montana. He is able to bring all kinds of sick horses back to health. Annie drives west to his ranch with Grace and Pilgrim. There, in the beautiful mountains, their lives are changed for ever.
